Affirmations: of the modern is a peer-reviewed, online, open-access journal. It is the official journal of the Australasian Modernist Studies Network.

Affirmations: of the modern aims to stir up modernist studies by drawing attention to that which has been, and remains, peripheral, overlooked, or unseen. Embracing our Antipodean vantage point, the journal seeks to build upon recent developments in the field that have troubled modernism’s too-settled histories and its centre-periphery relations. Whether through focusing on previously overlooked works or forms of modernist literature, art, and culture; examining the less-discussed sites, iterations, and experiences of modernity; or taking innovative approaches to modernism’s more well-known figures, texts, and themes, Affirmations seeks scholarship that challenges us to look at the field from new theoretical, critical, disciplinary, and interdisciplinary perspectives. While international in scope and contribution, Affirmations has a particular commitment to fostering modernist scholarship related to the Asia-Pacific region, and to promoting work by both established and emerging scholars in the region.

Focus and Scope

Affirmations: of the modern seeks to publish the best and most innovative work in the study of modernist cultures. We endeavour to publish work quickly and online, while under the strict conditions of double-blind peer review. In an increasingly crowded field, Affirmations seeks to interrogate modernism’s too-settled histories and to highlight that which has been, and which remains, peripheral, overlooked, or unseen. Previous issues have included work by a mix of eminent and emerging scholars, on a wide range of topics. We welcome submissions from authors at any level, both within and beyond the academy, and especially from women, people of colour, and working-class people. We encourage work on modernist cultures outside the hegemonic centres of production, and we have a particular commitment to modernisms relating to the Asia-Pacific region.

Publication Frequency

The journal is published online as a continuous volume and issue throughout the year. Articles are made available as soon as they are ready to ensure that there are no unnecessary delays in getting content publically available.

Special collections of articles are welcomed and will be published as part of the normal issue, but also within a separate collection page.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Authors of articles published remain the copyright holders and grant third parties the right to use, reproduce, and share the article according to the Creative Commons license agreement.

History

Affirmations: of the modern was established in 2013 under the auspices of the Centre for Modernism Studies in Australia. An international advisory board was assembled and the editorial board fixed. Since 2016, after the disestablishment of the Centre, the journal has been run out of the School of the Arts and Media, UNSW Sydney, with significant support from the UNSW Library. In 2020, Affirmations became the offical journal of the AMSN.
